One of the things that makes Russian River real estate so interesting is the variety of homes you can find tucked into the redwoods and hillsides. You don't just see standard California houses here. You find historic cabins, riverfront homes, hillside retreats, mid-century properties and, every once in a while, something completely different.

On a recent Tuesday Agent Tour, I had the opportunity to tour a dome house on Starrett Hill above Monte Rio, California, listed by Teresa Disbro.

This one immediately stood out.

A Dome House Above Monte Rio

The home offers approximately 1,411 square feet with two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Dome houses are always interesting architecturally, but sometimes the curved walls and unusual floor plans can make them feel smaller than their actual square footage.

That was not the case here.

This home felt surprisingly spacious, open and airy.

The high dome ceilings create a lot of vertical space, and the windows bring natural light into the main living areas while providing views into the surrounding trees.

Light, Bright and Surrounded by Redwoods

One of my favorite features was the relationship between the house and its surroundings.

From the kitchen, there's a window looking directly out into the trees. Throughout the home, you get that classic Russian River feeling of being surrounded by nature.

At the same time, the property gets good sunlight — something that can make a significant difference when comparing hillside homes in the Russian River area.

Some properties around Monte Rio can be heavily shaded by redwoods and surrounding hills. A home that combines trees, privacy and good sun exposure can be particularly appealing.

Multiple Decks and Outdoor Living Areas

Outdoor living is a major part of owning a home in the Russian River Valley, and this property offers several outdoor spaces.

There are multiple decks wrapping around portions of the home, giving you places to sit outside, relax and enjoy the surrounding forest.

There's also a separate hot tub deck.

Because the home is perched on the hillside, it has a feeling of separation from neighboring properties. You're up among the trees with Monte Rio down the hill below.

For buyers looking for privacy without being completely isolated from town, that's an interesting combination.

A Spacious Interior for a Dome Home

Inside, the main living area has the high ceilings you'd expect from dome architecture.

The home includes a bedroom and bathroom on the lower level, with additional living space upstairs.

The upper level was another pleasant surprise. Instead of feeling tight or cramped, it felt open and usable.

That's important with unusual architecture.

A unique house can look great in photographs, but the real question is whether the layout actually works in everyday life. This dome felt much more spacious than many similar homes I've seen.

What Makes Monte Rio Real Estate Different?

Monte Rio is one of the distinctive small communities along the Russian River in western Sonoma County.

The area is surrounded by redwoods and hills, with the Russian River running directly through town. You're close to Guerneville, Duncans Mills and the Sonoma Coast while still having the quiet, wooded environment that draws many buyers to this part of Sonoma County.

Real estate in Monte Rio can vary dramatically from one street to another.

You may find:

  • Hillside homes overlooking the river valley
  • Historic cabins tucked beneath the redwoods
  • Riverfront and near-river properties
  • Vacation-style retreats
  • Full-time residences
  • Architecturally unusual homes like this dome house

That's why understanding the individual roads, neighborhoods, hillsides, flood areas, sun exposure and property conditions is so important when buying real estate here.

Buying a Unique Home on the Russian River

Properties like dome houses can require a little more investigation than a typical suburban home.

Buyers should take time to understand items such as insurance, financing, inspections, construction type, permits, utilities, drainage, access and long-term maintenance.

Every property in the Russian River area is different.

That's especially true with older homes and unusual construction.

The goal isn't to avoid unique properties. Some of the most interesting homes in Sonoma County are unusual homes.

The key is knowing what you're buying.
