Today, we’re taking a drive down Moscow Road, a beautiful route that runs from Monte Rio to Duncans Mills, following the Russian River through one of the most interesting historic sections of West Sonoma County.
Along the way, we’ll visit Villa Grande, Patterson Point, Casini Ranch, and the area that helped give Moscow Road its unusual name.
Where Is Moscow Road?
Moscow Road begins near downtown Monte Rio, close to Main Street and the Monte Rio Bridge, and runs west toward Duncans Mills.
While Highway 116 is now the primary route through this section of the Russian River, Moscow Road offers a quieter and more scenic look at the communities that developed along the river.
The road follows the general path of the Russian River as it continues west toward the Pacific Ocean.
Monte Rio and Starrett Hill
From the Monte Rio Bridge, you can look west down the Russian River toward the Sonoma Coast.
Above Monte Rio is Starrett Hill, where you'll find hillside streets including areas such as Monte Vista Terrace and Rio Vista Terrace.
Many of these hillside neighborhoods date back to the early development of the Russian River as a vacation destination. In the early 1900s, the landscape looked considerably different, with fewer mature trees in some locations and more expansive views across the river valley.
Today, these hillsides are heavily wooded and offer the classic redwood setting most people associate with Monte Rio.
The Railroad History of Moscow Road
Long before Highway 116 became the main automobile route through the Russian River area, railroads played an important role in transportation.
Visitors could travel north from the San Francisco Bay Area and reach communities throughout the Russian River, including Monte Rio and Duncans Mills.
The railroad helped turn the Russian River into a major summer vacation destination.
The historic rail route ran through the corridor that Moscow Road follows today, connecting communities and resorts along the river before automobiles and modern highways changed how people traveled through Sonoma County.
That history is still one of the most interesting things about driving Moscow Road today.
Villa Grande: A Small Community on the Russian River
A short distance west of Monte Rio is Villa Grande, one of the Russian River's smallest and most charming residential communities.
Villa Grande developed during the era when vacationers traveled to the Russian River by train. Families from San Francisco and other Bay Area cities would spend summers along the river, creating small vacation communities throughout the area.
Today, Villa Grande is a mixture of full-time residents and second-home owners.
The neighborhood has narrow streets, redwood-covered lots, older cottages and homes near the river.
Real estate doesn't come on the market frequently in Villa Grande, simply because it is such a small community.
For buyers looking for a quiet Russian River setting close to Monte Rio, Villa Grande can be a very interesting place to watch.
Patterson Point and the Russian River
One of the special features of Villa Grande is access to the Russian River near Patterson Point.
This stretch of the river provides a beautiful example of why generations of people have been attracted to the Russian River for recreation and summer living.
The area is quiet and residential, and visitors should always respect the neighborhood, limited parking, posted rules and the work of local volunteers who help care for the river access.
From the river, you can also see Highway 116 running along the opposite side.
Although the highway and Moscow Road ultimately lead toward the same general destination, the experience on each side of the river is very different.
Cooler Temperatures Along the Lower Russian River
One thing buyers are sometimes surprised to discover is how much temperatures can vary between Russian River communities.
As you travel west toward Monte Rio, Villa Grande, Duncans Mills and Jenner, the influence of the Pacific Ocean becomes stronger.
On a warm summer day, it can be noticeably cooler here than it is just a few miles inland in Guerneville or Forestville.
That is one reason understanding individual neighborhoods is so important when buying Russian River real estate.
Two homes only several miles apart can have different amounts of sun, fog, temperature, redwood coverage and exposure.
How Did Moscow Road Get Its Name?
As Moscow Road continues west toward Duncans Mills, you reach the broad, flatter area around Casini Ranch.
Historically, this area was associated with a settlement known as Moscow, connected with the lumber and railroad era along the Russian River.
That historic Moscow settlement is the origin of the name Moscow Road.
The old settlement disappeared as the region changed and Duncans Mills became the more prominent community, but the road name remains as a reminder of the Russian River's early history.
When driving through the area today, the broad valley floor makes it easier to picture how a mill, railroad facilities and a small settlement could once have existed here.
Casini Ranch and the Approach to Duncans Mills
Near the western end of Moscow Road is Casini Ranch, one of the best-known campgrounds along the Russian River.
This section opens into a much broader landscape than the narrow redwood corridors closer to Monte Rio.
Nearby, roads branch toward Cazadero, Duncans Mills and the Sonoma Coast.
Continue west and Moscow Road eventually reaches Duncans Mills, where it connects with Highway 116 near the Russian River Rodeo Grounds.
Duncans Mills and the Sonoma Coast
Duncans Mills is one of the most distinctive small towns along the lower Russian River.
From here, you have several choices.
Head east on Highway 116 and you'll travel back toward Monte Rio and Guerneville.
Travel west and you're only a short drive from Jenner, where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean.
Or head north toward Cazadero, another historic Russian River community surrounded by redwood forests and rural properties.
This location is one reason Duncans Mills is so interesting. It sits at the intersection of the Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Cazadero areas.

What Is It Like to Live Along Moscow Road?
Homes along Moscow Road and in nearby communities can offer a very different lifestyle from properties elsewhere in Sonoma County.
Depending on the location, buyers may find:

- Second homes and vacation properties
- Rural settings close to small communities
