Redwood creekside homes, sunny ridge-top settings and larger homesteads between Kidd Creek Road and Scanlon Road.
Upper Mid Cazadero brings together several very different settings along the Austin Creek canyon. Starting where Kidd Creek Road meets Cazadero Highway and continuing north to Scanlon Road, this stretch includes small creekside neighborhoods, wooded hillside roads and ridge-top properties with sunshine and views. Some homes sit close to the water beneath the redwoods; others climb well above the canyon into a more open setting.

Kidd Creek Road marks the southern starting point of this guide. The small creek winds through a beautiful redwood setting, with a handful of homes along the water. This is one of those pockets where the character comes from the combination of the creek, surrounding trees and smaller-scale homes. It has a different feel from the sunnier mountain properties farther up the hillside.
Traveling north on Cazadero Highway brings you to Sunrise Mountain Road. This small subdivision climbs toward a ridge along the mountaintop, where the tree canopy opens and some properties enjoy excellent sunshine and broad views. Many parcels are an acre or more, giving this area a more spacious feel than the smaller creekside neighborhoods below.
Sunrise Mountain is served by a privately maintained road and its own mutual water system. The community association manages the road and water arrangements. For buyers comparing locations around Cazadero, that combination of a defined hillside community, larger parcels and ridge-top exposure makes Sunrise Mountain worth a closer look.
Austin Creek Road continues beside Austin Creek through the upper part of the canyon. Rosewood Circle and Redwood Heights Drive add smaller residential pockets along this corridor. Homes here range from shaded creek-oriented settings to properties a little higher on the hillside, with differences in sunshine, outlook and the relationship to the water.
The bridges and road junctions are useful landmarks when getting to know this area. Around the northern end of Austin Creek Road, the route connects with Cazadero Highway and East Austin Creek Road. It is worth driving both sides of the canyon: nearby homes can have quite different settings depending on the creek, elevation and surrounding trees.
Near the meeting of Austin Creek and East Austin Creek, the canyon changes direction and the roads connect around the creek crossings. East Austin Creek Road follows the East Austin Creek corridor, with wooded residential settings continuing toward the Cazadero area. This guide focuses on the portion around the junction and the approach to Scanlon Road; downtown Cazadero is a separate setting farther north.
Pole Mountain Road leads into a more rural hillside setting, with a series of larger homesteads and properties spread through the landscape. This is a different experience from a compact creekside cabin neighborhood. Buyers exploring this road are often comparing land, privacy, sunshine and a broader mountain outlook.
At the summit of Pole Mountain is the fire lookout, a recognizable local landmark above the surrounding ridges. The mountain and its lookout are part of the landscape that gives this stretch of West Sonoma County its character.
Scanlon Road marks the northern end of Upper Mid Cazadero for this guide. It is the road to Camp Royaneh, the long-established Scout camp in Cazadero. The smaller Wildwood Lane community off Scanlon Road includes a few homes bordering Austin Creek, adding another creekfront pocket to this part of the canyon.
The biggest difference within Upper Mid Cazadero is the setting. Kidd Creek and the Austin Creek pockets offer the close-up experience of water and redwoods. Sunrise Mountain brings larger parcels, better exposure to sunshine at the top and views across the surrounding landscape. Pole Mountain Road offers larger homestead settings. These are close enough to explore in one drive, but the experience at each property can be very different.
